Build announcements can make everything sound urgent.

New runtime. New agent story. New hardware. New security model. New platform direction. Big confident words everywhere.

For day-to-day development, I usually want a smaller question:

What can I try this week that would make my machine less annoying?

From the Windows Build 2026 developer announcements, the thing I would try first is not the biggest AI feature. It is the boring setup work: Dev Configs, WinGet Configuration, Windows Terminal, WSL, PowerShell 7, and the idea that a Windows developer machine should be reproducible from a file instead of rebuilt from memory.

That sounds less flashy. It is also more useful.

The first thing I would try: Dev Configs

Microsoft’s Dev Configs for Windows are described as curated, open-source configuration files that can take a fresh Windows machine to a ready-to-code state with one command.

That is the kind of feature I like because it attacks a familiar problem.

Every developer setup eventually turns into folklore:

  • Install this package manager.
  • Turn on this setting.
  • Use this terminal profile.
  • Install this runtime.
  • Remember this Explorer setting.
  • Ask someone which version of the tool actually works.

It is fine when one person is setting up one laptop. It gets messy when a team has to repeat it across new machines, test boxes, contractors, or a half-forgotten workstation after a reinstall.

Dev Configs are interesting because they make that setup visible. Instead of “I think I clicked these five things last time,” you get a configuration file that can be reviewed, changed, and reused.

That is not glamorous. That is the point.

The part I would steal for my own repo

The WinGet Configuration docs say project-specific setups can live in a repository at:

.config/configuration.winget

That is the piece I would try before anything else.

Not a grand company-wide migration. Not a perfect golden image. Just one small config in one repo that answers:

What does this project expect on a Windows dev machine?

I would keep the first version intentionally small:

  • PowerShell 7.
  • Git.
  • The editor or CLI the project actually uses.
  • Any language runtime that is safe to install this way.
  • A few Windows settings that remove friction.

Then I would test it on a disposable Windows VM or spare machine.

If it works, great. If it fails, that failure is useful too. It tells you which parts of the setup were never really automated.

Why this matters more than another shiny tool

The most expensive developer problems are often not dramatic.

They look like this:

  • “It works on my machine.”
  • “I forgot that setting.”
  • “The new laptop took two days to feel normal.”
  • “The build only works after installing this one dependency nobody documented.”
  • “We are not sure which version of the SDK the project expects.”

None of that feels like a platform announcement. It is just daily drag.

A checked-in setup file will not solve every one of those problems. It will not replace real documentation, good onboarding, or a thoughtful dev environment.

But it creates a place for the truth to live.

That is enough to make it worth trying.

The second thing I would try: make Terminal boring-good

Windows Terminal is not new, but it keeps becoming a more important part of the Windows developer story.

The reason is simple: most modern developer workflows are multi-shell now.

One project might use PowerShell. Another might live in WSL. A third might need a cloud CLI, a container shell, or a temporary admin session. The terminal is where those contexts meet.

For me, the practical checklist would be:

  • Set Windows Terminal as the default terminal.
  • Keep a clean PowerShell 7 profile.
  • Add a WSL profile only if the project actually needs Linux tooling.
  • Keep font, theme, and tab behavior simple enough that screenshots and pairing sessions are readable.
  • Avoid stuffing the shell profile with clever startup work that slows every new tab.

That last point matters. A terminal that looks beautiful but opens slowly becomes friction very quickly.

The third thing I would try: WSL only where it earns its keep

WSL is one of the best reasons to use Windows as a development machine, especially when the target stack is Linux-shaped.

But I would not turn every project into a WSL project by default.

The better rule is:

Use WSL when the project behaves more honestly in Linux than in native Windows.

That includes a lot of web backends, container-heavy stacks, shell-heavy build systems, and open-source tools that assume Linux paths or Linux package conventions.

For projects that are already comfortable on Windows, native Windows plus PowerShell may be simpler.

The goal is not to prove one environment is better. The goal is to reduce surprise.

The fourth thing I would try: Advanced Windows Settings

Microsoft’s newer developer-facing Windows settings are useful because they put small but important knobs in one place.

I care less about the branding and more about the shape of the workflow:

  • File Explorer settings that make development less awkward.
  • Terminal and sudo-related controls.
  • Developer-focused toggles that are easier to find.
  • A more direct path to settings that used to require searching old forum posts.

Small settings matter because they affect every project, every day.

If a setting removes ten seconds of annoyance fifty times a week, that is not tiny anymore.

What I would not do yet

I would not rebuild my whole workflow around a keynote.

I would not migrate every repo into a new config system on day one.

I would not assume every AI-adjacent developer feature is ready for the way I work.

And I would not call a setup automation story “done” until it has been tested on a clean machine.

The low-risk move is smaller:

  1. Pick one repo.
  2. Write down the tools it actually needs.
  3. Try expressing that setup as configuration.
  4. Test it somewhere disposable.
  5. Keep what works.

That gives you useful evidence without turning your whole machine into an experiment.

A practical first-week checklist

If I were trying this today, I would do this:

  • Read Microsoft’s Build 2026 Windows developer post once, then ignore the hype words.
  • Open the Dev Configs and WinGet Configuration docs.
  • Create a tiny .config/configuration.winget in one non-critical repo.
  • Include only the obvious dependencies first.
  • Test it on a clean VM or spare Windows profile.
  • Write down what failed.
  • Move one repeated setup step from memory into the config.
  • Stop before it becomes a weekend project.

That last step is important.

The best version of this work is boring and incremental. A setup file that installs three correct things is more useful than an ambitious config nobody trusts.

My take

The interesting Windows developer story from Build 2026 is not that Microsoft has another pile of new features.

It is that Windows development keeps moving toward a more repeatable model:

  • machine setup as configuration,
  • terminal and shell workflows as first-class paths,
  • WSL as a practical bridge instead of a novelty,
  • developer settings gathered closer to where developers need them.

That is the kind of progress I like.

Not because it makes a good demo.

Because it makes Monday morning less irritating.
